While much of what an agent and an adviser do is similar, talk with coaches, teams and scouts, there is one significant difference between an adviser and an agent and it boils down to one primary area: compensation.
An agent works for future fees, whether that be a percentage of future earnings, commission or a fee. They are not paid when the services are rendered.
An advisor works for a fee or specific rate for a list of services. There is no compensation against future earnings. Payment is made when services are rendered.
On the one hand you are considered a professional and on the other you are an amateur.
The difference between an agent and an adviser is the difference between playing or not playing in the NCAA.
In some cases it is in the players best interests to have an agent whereas in other circumstances an adviser is the best choice. This is a significant difference and one that SSM will discuss in detail with potential families.
